Defining Operational Teams: The Foundation for Innovation

Creating effective operational teams is one of the fundamental pillars for any innovation initiative. A well-structured team aligned with the project's objectives can accelerate the process of discovering and implementing innovative solutions. In this context, it is essential to understand how to compose teams that can collaborate productively, bringing different perspectives and skills to the table.

First, it is important to identify the competencies necessary for the project. An operational team should be multidisciplinary, bringing together experts from areas such as technology, design, business, and even social sciences, depending on the type of problem being addressed. This diversity allows the team to explore different angles and generate more comprehensive solutions.

In addition to technical skills, it is crucial to consider behavioral aspects when forming teams. Communication ability, empathy, and resilience are characteristics that enhance collaboration and help overcome the natural challenges of the innovation process. Therefore, the selection of team members should consider not only the resume but also the interpersonal profile.

Once the team is formed, the next step is to train its members in creating and testing hypotheses. This skill is vital for developing a solid and precise Problem Statement. The process begins with identifying assumptions that underpin the initial vision of the problem.

To create effective hypotheses, the team must have a deep understanding of the problem's context. This involves research, interviews with stakeholders, and analysis of existing data. Each hypothesis should be clear, specific, and measurable, allowing the team to objectively test its validity.

Testing hypotheses is an iterative and scientific process. The team should be trained to design simple and quick experiments that can confirm or refute each assumption. Tools such as MVPs (Minimum Viable Products) and prototypes are essential at this stage, as they allow hypotheses to be validated with minimal resources.

It is important for the team to understand that failing to validate a hypothesis is not a failure but an opportunity for learning. Each test provides valuable insights that help refine the understanding of the problem and guide the team toward solutions more aligned with the real needs of users.

Assumptions in the Problem Statement

The Problem Statement should be built upon tested and validated assumptions. Often, teams begin projects based on unverified assumptions, which can lead to developing solutions that do not address the real problem. Therefore, the exercise of listing, testing, and revising assumptions is a critical step in the process.

A good practice is to document each assumption and its status (validated, refuted, or pending) on a board visible to the entire team. This promotes transparency and facilitates communication, ensuring that everyone is aligned regarding the understanding of the problem.

Finally, the team should be encouraged to continually review the Problem Statement as new information emerges. The innovation environment is dynamic, and the flexibility to adapt the project’s focus as learnings occur is what differentiates high-performing teams. Innovation is not a destination but a continuous path of discoveries and adjustments.
